A New Law in Kansas Would Make Medical Marijuana Legal For Military Veterans!

One new piece of legislation in the Kansas legislature would make medical marijuana available to military veterans in the state. A group of senators from both parties in Kansas have introduced the Veterans First Medical Cannabis Act.

This legislation would legalize the production, sale, and use of cannabis for medical purposes. Eligible patients who are actively serving in any branch of the armed forces, or who have been honorably discharged or generally released under honorable terms, will be given patient identity cards initially during the first 60 days after the law takes effect.

One of the bill’s co-sponsors, Senator Tom Holland, underlined the need to move forward with medical marijuana reform. Holland argued that “this problem is vital to all Kansans.” A majority of states now permit the use of medical marijuana, and this trend shows no signs of slowing down.

It’s about time Kansas joined the ranks of progressive states. Only three states now allow some type of medical marijuana use, and one of those is Kansas. However, neighboring states like Missouri have decriminalized marijuana use for adults.

Similar legislation was introduced by Holland during the 2019 legislative session. After a hearing at the Committee on Public Health and Welfare, the bill ultimately failed to pass. A medical marijuana bill was approved by the Kansas House by a vote of 79 to 42 in 2021, however, the Senate did not take up that bill or any others dealing with legalization.

All political parties back the Veterans First Medical Cannabis Act. Holland (D-Baldwin City), Corson (D-Prairie Village), Doll (R-Garden City), Faust-Goudeau (D-Wichita), Francisco (D-Lawrence), Haley (D-Kansas City), Pettey (D-Kansas City), and Pittman (R) are all cosponsors of the bill (D-Leavenworth). The Senate Committee on Federal and State Affairs has received this legislation and is preparing to hold a hearing on it.
