At the opening of the 2023 General Assembly, a big crowd gathered in the Kentucky State Capitol. The purpose of this initiative is to convince Commonwealth legislators that changing cannabis laws is crucial. The decriminalization of Marijuana and the establishment of a medical Marijuana program were two of the main goals of the coalition that included Kentucky NORML.
According to Kentucky NORML’s executive director, “Kentuckians are ready for and deserve more” after Gov. Beshear’s recent historic action towards cannabis justice in the Commonwealth. A hallway full of images of Kentucky patients was displayed at the demonstration, which continued in the Capitol tunnel.
The objective was to attract the attention of passing legislators so that they may stop and sign a banner showing their support for the cause. It was signed by Gov. Beshear. Erin Conley‘s participation in the demonstration was motivated by a desire to share her own personal experience. Her son Brennan Conley, now 15, has had intractable epilepsy since he was two years old.
Erin has indicated that she is out of alternatives because she has tried every possible medication. She hopes that by coming, she may help people in her home state of Kentucky who are dealing with the same medical issues that her son has by spreading the word about medicinal Marijuana.
However, knowing that other people share my struggle and my son’s struggle gives me hope. Some of his supporters are folks who don’t even know him personally. “As a mother, that means more to me than you can know,” Erin remarked.
