The office of the medical examiner in Hillsborough County found that Billy Mays’ cardiac ailment was exacerbated by his cocaine use. Dr. Leszek Chrostowski, the county’s associate medical examiner, was quoted as saying in a statement that Mays died from a fatal arrhythmia of the heart brought on by hypertensive and arteriosclerotic heart disease.
“He further concluded that cocaine use caused or contributed to the development of his heart problems, and therefore contributed to his death,” it continued. According to Chrostowski, Mays took cocaine “in the few days prior to death but not immediately prior to death” because toxicological testing only revealed breakdown products of cocaine, not the substance itself.

Low levels of ethyl alcohol “associated with the social use of a few beverages” and the opioid medicines hydrocodone, oxycodone, and tramadol were also discovered in the postmortem. Both therapeutic and subtherapeutic quantities of the medicines were discovered in Mays, who had been prescribed them for hip discomfort.
